Family Dinner with our New Partner Anthony's Pizza & Pan Pasta
It used to be that you could ask anybody about Anthony's Pizza and they could immediately tell you at least where it is, if not rave on and on about the tasty pizza and pasta found there. Then came the overpass. For three long years the overpass made it nearly impossible to reach any of the stores and restaurants found in the strip mall on Glenn's Bay Road and thus the buzz on Anthony's Pizza died down. What was once a Surfside Beach pizza buzzword has become a hidden gem.
And what a gem it is. Anthony's pizza and Pan Pasta is everything you're looking for in a family friendly pizza place. That's why I was thrilled to take out my family of 4 for a night of pizza. I have 2 rowdy boys (a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old) plus 1 rowdy husband so I'm always a little nervous in public. They're still pretty hyped up on Halloween sugar so I crossed my fingers for a good night. My youngest quickly disabused me of that hope by melting down into what I assume to be an atomic-size sugar crash. This was soothed with an offering of chips brought by our cheerful and undaunted waitress. I now love that woman with my whole heart.
She's obviously in good company; each server greeted us with enthusiasm and genuine kindness making it easy to feel apart of the family. We ordered the Family Special and--boy howdy--was that plenty of food for us. I thought this would be a great way for us to try several things on the menu, as it comes with garlic knots, chicken wings, and pizza.
The first thing that came out was the garlic knots. If you're a person who orders garlic knots and thinks "gee, I hope there isn't any garlic on these," this isn't for you. The garlic butter is prominent and delicious. What I love about these is there is enough garlic butter to later dip my pizza crust in it. The garlic knots are maybe my favorite part of the meal. (Gotta have my carbs.) My family gobbled down the whole plate. (I promise I didn't eat the whole plate myself, tempted though I may have been.)
Next came the chicken wings. We got the medium spicy wings partly so that the children wouldn't ask us for any, and partly because they are apparently the most popular flavor. They were good. I see why they are the popular flavor, and now I want to go back and try the really spicy ones next.
Let me ask you something. What do you call a small child who eats ONLY the crust of the pizza?
That's what my 3-year-old does. Is this normal? Have you met any other children like this? I'm assuming we don't need a doctor because honestly I kind of understand; the crust is absolutely lovely. I mean, the whole thing is great, but I really enjoyed the fluffy, crunchy crust. Remember what I said about dipping the crust in the garlic butter? Try it. You'll be glad you did. We ordered a classic pepperoni and it is delicious (as you might have guessed). I especially love the long, melty strings of cheese as you bite into your slice. There are few things I love more in life than some nice stringy cheese.
Do you like pasta? I have to admit that I'm one of the few crazy people in the world who doesn't absolutely love pasta, but if YOU like pasta you should try it at Anthony's! They have a great selection of pasta to choose from and even a "build your own pasta" option. I wish I had tried some just so I could tell you I did, but I was absolutely stuffed by the end of the night. Please try some and tell me how it is.
