Keeping Valuables Safe at the Beach

Warm, sunny days are perfect for a trip to the beach, yet can be easily ruined if your valuables disappear! The best advice is to bring as little as possible; of course, most beachgoers still need to bring smartphones, keys and wallets. Here are several techniques to hopefully keep your possessions safe, which can increase the chances you'll come back to the resort with all of your belongings!

Key Points

  • You can protect your belongings by reusing empty jars, bringing a waist pouch, and grabbing a spot on the beach near a life guard!

  • Other ideas include investing in a towel with a hidden pocket, or asking members of your party to share the responsibility of keeping your items safe.

Reuse Empty Jars and Bottles

Clean out and repurpose empty containers such as empty sunscreen containers, shampoo bottles, or even food packaging. Thieves are less likely to pick up a sunscreen bottle or a sleeve of Pringles chips as they walk by!

Hide Cash in Feminine Hygiene Boxes

Most people avoid looking into tampon or feminine napkin boxes unless they have to, which make them a sneaky hiding place. Make sure the box is full of actual products, and tuck your treasures safely away.

Buy a Towel with a Secret Pocket

There are several options out there, if you’d like to disguise your valuables using a towel. Simply zip your items into a hidden pocket, and potential thieves will walk right by your towel!

Use a Tennis Ball

Grab a tennis ball, make a slice, and you’ve got a small container that opens when you give it a squeeze. Simply squeeze the ball, insert your valuables. and release. The ball will pop right back into shape and no one will be the wiser!

Invest in a Dry Bag or Waterproof Waist Pouch

One of the best ways to keep your valuables safe is to always keep an eye on them.

There are many bag styles to choose from, and a waist pouch will keep your bag from coming loose in any big waves. If you’re mostly worried about your phone, bring along a waterproof phone case with a lanyard.

Sit Near a Lifeguard

Simply keeping your personal belongings near a lifeguard may be enough deterrent to keep thieves away. If there’s a lifeguard on duty, try to stay in their line of sight.

Ask a Travel Companion

Even if you’re at the beach with a group of friends, make sure your valuables are kept in the center of the group and not at the outer edges where a passer-by could swiftly pinch them without you noticing.

Remember!

It only takes a minute to decide on a trick (or two!) to keep your possessions safe. Consider what tactic might be best for you, and enjoy the beach with your mind at ease!
