Here are 5 games the whole family can play to pass the time on your drive to the Grand Strand:
ABC Game
Playing the ABC Game involves the letters on billboards and other road signs from A to Z. You start looking for the letter A and as you pass a sign (for example a road sign that says the word "entrance" on it), you would say “A on entrance” and move onto the next letter in the alphabet. The first person to finish the alphabet wins! One thing to remember is that you can't use the same word as someone else, so be sure to declare your letter and the word it’s found on quickly! Or else another family member might use the same letter. This is a great and easy game way to keep occupied during your drive!
I Spy
I Spy is a classic guessing game that keys you into your surroundings. The game starts by having one player choose an object, then gives clues to the rest of the group until someone correctly guesses the object. These clues start with the phrase, "I spy with my little eye something ..." and then they provide an adjective to describe the object. The person who guessed correctly is the one who gets to choose the next object. Even younger travelers can play this game, as long as the object is in the car!
What if you are on a long stretch of road that doesn’t have any signs or landmarks? These next few games will do the trick!
The Name Game
The Name Game gives everyone the chance to show off their knowledge of famous people! The first player starts by saying the name of someone famous, like “Elvis Presley.” The next player then names another famous person whose first name begins with the first letter of the last name of the previous famous person; for example, “Paul McCartney“ where the “P” in ”Paul” matches the ”P” in “Presley.”
20 Questions
One person in your party will think of a person, place or thing. The goal of the game is for the other players to guess what the noun is by asking twenty (or fewer) yes/no questions. The winning player then gets to choose the next noun to guess.
The Category Game
This last game requires pens/pencils and paper and a little preparation. To prepare for this game, write a list of a few categories (such as ”animal, city, body part, vehicle, actor, clothing, sport, drink") on each piece of paper. When everyone has the list of categories, choose a letter that each player will use to fill in each category. For example, if you were to play with the letter "G" you could list a “gopher, Georgetown, Grand Palms,“ until all the categories are filled in. This is a game that is less competitive, but is still very entertaining!
