Key Points

  • Plan ahead to make your day at the beach as enjoyable and healthy as possible by freezing drinks in advance, and protecting your skin.

  • Additional suggestions include packing a kiddie pool, leaving the designer shades safe at home, and being smart about protecting your valuables.

Stay Hydrated

Start your beach day by filling up available water bottles, setting a reminder on your phone to take a swig, and packing some electrolytes to infuse with your water for some extra nutrients. Bringing water-rich snacks such as watermelon, grapes, peaches, and oranges is an easy way to staying hydrated easier, especially for the kids!

Freeze Drinks Ahead of Time

Place your water bottles, sodas, or juice pouches in the freezer ahead of time, so you can enjoy your cool beverage in the heat of the day. Similarly, stash a bottle of sunscreen in the cooler too, and enjoy some cool lotion when you reapply. Or invest in some stainless steel water bottles.

Bring Snacks

Snacks can make a day at the beach even more enjoyable! Food such as trail mix, popcorn, jerky, granola bars and pretzels can take the heat. Food items to include in your cooler, consider frozen grapes, string cheese, cheese with crackers, fruits, and sandwiches. Consider putting food in plastic containers to prevent them from being crushed. Include individual ice creams as a sweet treat!

Keep an Eye on the Water

Flags along the beach will alert beachgoers to any serious water conditions. You can also check with a lifeguard if you need help interpreting the different flags. Our article Rip Current Awareness: What Every Beachgoer Needs to Know to learn more about being safe in the ocean.

Be Careful with Your Possessions

Leave Designer Shades at Home

Sunglasses are one of the top items that can get lost or damaged at the beach. Instead of wearing your favorite sunglasses, pick up some less expensive ones that you won't be sad to lose if they get washed away by the

waves.

Pack Baby Powder

Even if you aren't bringing little ones to the beach, throw a bottle of baby powder in your bag to help get rid of sandy feet and legs. Baby powder absorbs excess water and makes it so easy to wipe off any unwanted sand.

Be Sun Smart

Sunscreen is the most important beach essential, but it's hard to remember to reapply when you're having fun! Set an alarm on your phone for every two hours to help you remember to take care of your skin. Umbrellas, pop-up tents, wide brimmed hats, and sun protective clothing are also good ideas to prevent sunburns. Pro tip: apply waterproof sunscreen before you get in the car or on the shuttle. The drive to the beach gives the sunscreen time to soak in!

Pack a Pool

Wait, isn't this a beach trip? Yep, but an inflatable kiddie pool can keep toddlers close at hand and still able to enjoy the sand and water.
